Sinn Féin National Launch 2016 events.
On the 6th February in the historic Wynns Hotel in Dublin City Centre where both the Irish Volunteers and Cumann Na mBan were founded Sinn Féin launched an ambitious and innovative programme of commemorative events for 2016. With the general public still in shock at the bungling of the Irish Government’s launch the previous November including the infamous Failte Ireland video, Sinn Féins launch was widely praised even by a hostile media for it’s presentation and quality of the programme. Featuring an original 1916 Proclamation, the door handle from the G.P.O. and a bayonet recovered from inside the G.P.O. which were supplied by the Irish Volunteers Commemorative Organisation, the launch also featured uniformed re enactors and the reading of the Proclamation by Pádraig Pearse, actor Jim Roche.
Attended by senior Sinn Féin leadership and introduced by Sinn Féin Deputy President Mary Lou McDonald TD the National 1916 Co-ordinator Bartle D’Arcy outlined the key events planned. Joint First Minister Martin McGuinness MLA and Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams spoke as did the great grandson of James Connolly, James Connolly Heron. A large number of 1916 relatives were in attendance in stark contrast to the state launch and all were supportive of the programme.
Key events launched were;
1st August 2015 a re-enactment of the O’Donovan Rossa Funeral.
27th February 2016 opening of REVOLUTION 1916 the Exhibition in the Ambassador Theatre on O’Connell street for 33 weeks.
